After completing his commercial baccalaureate, Thomas Hurter trained as a military pilot and later as a commercial airline pilot. In 2007 he also completed an MBA business degree at the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. The former air force pilot has been working as a commercial airline pilot for Swissair and Swiss since 1993, and currently captains A-330 and A-340 planes on long-distance routes. He has been a member of the National Council representing the Canton of Schaffhausen since 2007, and has become well-known for his expertise in traffic and safety politics. He has been the President of the Automobile Club of Switzerland ACS since September 2016, and was elected as the Chairman of Aero Suisse in October 2017. These two appointments also confirm his expertise in transport matters.
